No One Told me Parenting Would Be This Hard
Parenting is one of the most rewarding and powerful experiences in a person’s life. For many, it is also the most overwhelming and stressful of experiences. Though you might be feeling pressure to be a “good parent,” know that being a “good parent” can mean a variety of things. Also, parenting doesn’t always come naturally. No one is born knowing everything there is to know about parenting, and that’s okay.
Being a parent means that you will face constant challenges. The advice your family and friends give you might conflict with what your doctor says. You may be struggling to try to parent different than how you were parented. You may not understand appropriate growth and development for your child or feel like you are unable to keep up with changing safety guidelines. It’s exhausting to keep up with all of the change.
So, what can you do?
- Stop beating yourself up. You are not alone. Parenting is hard.
- Educate yourself. If you are looking for advice on the internet, make sure that the websites you consult are reputable, such as websites ending in .org or .edu. Ask those you trust for help and guidance. Then, see what works for you. There is no “one size fits all” with parenting. What works for your neighbor may not work for you.
