Steps to Becoming a Foster Parent

Interested in Foster Care... What’s next?

If you are interested in providing foster care for youth in Nebraska the process is easier than you think!

Step One: Complete Forms
Please fill out the online form. CEDARS Program Manager, Michaela Young, will then contact you to schedule a home visit. During the home visit, Michaela will take a tour of your home to ensure that your home will meet the State of Nebraska’s licensing standards. Michaela will also give you additional information on providing foster care and have you complete the license application, foster care application, and fill out a form for background checks.

If you are already a licensed foster parent through another agency and you are interested in finding more about what CEDARS Foster Care has to offer, all you need to do is call or email Michaela Young at 402-437-8870.

Step Two: Training
CEDARS Foster Care offers a ten week training class called Partnering for Safety and Permanence-Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (PS-MAPP). PS-MAPP is an interactive training designed to prepare potential foster parents for caring for children who have been abused or neglected. It will also help you in identifying your placement preferences as well as to allow you to make a more informed decision about foster parenting.

CEDARS Foster Care offers PS-MAPP several times throughout the year to best meet everyone’s needs. Please check out our training calendar to see if there is a class time that will work best for you.

Step Three: Licensing
Throughout PS-MAPP you will be assigned a Family Resource Partner who will license your home. During the first week of training you will be given a “Family Profile”. The Family Profile is completed by you, the foster parent, and given to your Family Resource Partner who will then write a home study on your family. The home study is often referred to as a “book report” on your life. It will assist CEDARS and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to get a better idea of what your family is like and what type of placements would work best for your home and family. During this time we will also speak with references to gain more information about you. Your assigned Family Resource Partner will assist you in this process and be able to answer any additional questions you have about foster parenting.

Once you have completed PS-MAPP and your home is licensed you will be ready to accept placements. Our dedicated placement team will get to know you and learn your placement preferences in order to make the best match for your family. Once you accept a child into your home you will have an assigned Family Resource Partner who works specifically with your family and home to assist you in meeting all of the child’s needs.

As you can see this process takes a bit of time but it gives you the opportunity to help a child in need and make a difference. At CEDARS we believe that all children need safety and stability and we strive to make sure that our foster homes feel supported.
