22% of Children Nationwide Live in Poverty

Nationally, 22 percent of children 17 and under, and in our state 17.4 percent of children 17 and under, live in poverty according to the most recent Kids Count and Kids Count in Nebraska Reports. Conditions of poverty can create environments of instability and high stress for families. Parents who feel under-resourced and highly stressed may lack such supports as other adults to listen to their concerns. This can lead to situations in which parents can sometimes, without meaning to, take their frustrations out on their children. By wrapping supportive services around under-resourced parents, such as locating beds for a family without any, we hope to prevent the possibilities of child abuse and neglect and make the futures bright for the children in our community.
